Fafa Island Resort

If you've ever dreamed of a holiday on your own secluded south sea island with deserted beaches and turquoise blue waters, then Fafa is the place for you. You can become Robinson Crusoe, but still enjoy the comforts of a first class resort, as the Fafa Island Resort is noted for the quality of it's seafood cuisine and good wine list.

The resort is situated on it's own coral atoll of some 18 acres located 7km off the coast from Nuku'alofa, and reached by the resort's own boat.  They are very conscious of their impact on the natural enviroment of the island, and have done everything they can to minimise this, such as using local materials for the building, using solar power, natural ventilation, and only having a small number of guests on the island.  The Resort is on the western coast of Fafa Island, and the rest of the island is untouched in its natural beauty.  There is a coral reef surrounding the island, which has been declared a special marine protected area by the Tongan government.  Inside the reef, there is a warm, shallow lagoon, ideal for swimming and snorkeling, but motorised watersports are not allowed, to further protect the enviroment here.

Guest numbers are limited to only 26 per night. The accommodation is in 13 thatch-roofed fales (bungalows) intricately made in the traditional Tonga way, with high ceilings, coconut palm poles, coconut thatched walls and wood shingle roofs. There are 6 Deluxe village fales and 7 well appointed Superior Fales, each built far enough apart and surrounded by lush vegetation to ensure complete privacy.

Each fale offers 1 King bed or 2 Single beds, an ensuite bathroom wich is partially open air, with a private courtyard flower garden with outdoor shower, ceiling fans, fridge, a sitting area with armchairs and coffee table, slatted windows to let the ocean breezes through, and doors opening to a furnished private deck area and a large hammock for just relaxing.  The Deluxe Fales are slightly larger than the Superior, and offer a king bed on a raised platform, a single daybed/window seat, a large courtyard garden and sun loungers near the beach.  There are also a few 2-Bed Deluxe Fales, that have a 2nd bedroom with twin beds in a separate building, connected by a large verandah; ideal for families or groups travelling together.

The restaurant and bar offers a varied, daily-changing menu of Pacific cuisine with a European influence, offering freshest seafood and local produce from the local market.  The bar offers a good selection of beers, wines and tropical cocktails, and you can dine or enjoy a cool drink inside in the dining room or out in the open air on the sun terrace, with stunning sea views.

Apart from relaxing on one of the deserted, sandy beaches or dozing in a hammock in the shade, Fafa offers a variety of activities. Water sports such as paddle boats, kayaks windsurfing and snorkelling are available, and the resort boat can take you to neighbnouring reefs and deserted islands nearby for you to explore, however no motorised water sports are permitted around the island. There is some great diving locations around the resort, and the local dive company will pick you up right from the beach at the Resort.  Polynesian Massages will help the stress just melt away while you enjoy the view, and the beautiful fragrance of the tropical flowers.

'Fafá Island Resort appeals to the upmarket eco-tourism clientele which prefers to spend the holidays in unspoiled places but want to enjoy at the same time high quality facilities, comfort and service. Its exclusiveness and primitive luxury makes it a definite honeymoon destination.'
