Vanua Levu is Fijis' second largest
island, just a short five-fifty minute flight from Nadi or Suva to
either Savusavu in the South or Labasa in the North. The island is
often referred to as the Northern group, as there are a number of
smaller islands close to it, including Tavenui that make up their
own little grouping.
Compared to Viti Levu the island of
Vanua Levu is underdeveloped with no large towns and no industrial
activity at all on the island. What industry there is is mainly
small farming. There is very limited road access to the islands
interior and the inhabitants live in small villages or individual
homes built among the trees.
The island is still very heavily
forested and looks much as it has done for hundreds of years.
So if you are looking to find the true scenic past of Fiji, to
experience the way the Fijians lived before the western explorers
arrived, and get away from it all, then a visit to Vanua Levu is a
must.
